AGEING SKIN AND HOW TO COMBAT IT

By Dr. Susan Berry

Skin is the body’s largest organ. Skin has an important immunoprotective function. The health of our skin and the ability to perform this function is critical to our wellbeing. Skin is composed of 3 layers: the Epidermis, the Dermis and the Subcutaneous Layer. The Corneum Stratum of the Epidermis is the layer that most skin care products target. The Dermis is a layer which is rich in collagen and elastin. As we age, the rate of natural exfoliation of the skin slows down often giving skin a dull, lifeless appearance. In addition the Dermis becomes thinner. As a result, skin loses its elasticity, fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. The radiance of a youthful healthy skin seems to start to slip away.

How does skin age? Free radicals wreak havoc on the skin’s structure. A broad spectrum anti-oxidant defense is thus the cornerstone of any skin care regimen. Declining levels of hormones as we age, such as Oestrogen and Progesterone, adversely affect the structure of the skin. UV radiation due to sun exposure causes photo damage leading to premature ageing of the skin. Good sun protection is a must. Cigarette smoking damages the skin’s collagen. The premature wrinkled face of a smoker is only too familiar to a Dermatologist. Glycation is a process where oxidized and damaged skin proteins such as collagen react with sugars. This leads to the formation of AGEs (advanced glycation end products) which accumulate in the skin as we age. This accumulation leads to a brown discoloration of the skin and cause damage to collagen. These are the various mechanisms by which the skin ages.

Advances in research have led to the discovery of several compounds that can help reverse the visible signs of ageing. These compounds can act as chemical messengers between the different layers of the skin, thus allowing protection, repair and strengthening of the skin.  Prevention of glycation is a recent concept in the management of skin ageing. Dr. Berry is a great advocate of scientifically based products such as the ZO range by Dr. Obagi, and also the Neostrata and  Skinceutical ranges. These Cosmeceuticals help treat and reverse age related changes in the skin effectively with great results. Please book a consultation with Dr. Berry if you would like to discuss any of these products.
